Hand & Wrist Conditions

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Overview

Carpal tunnel syndrome, a condition that many individuals experience, is a common hand disorder characterized by a compressed median nerve inside the carpal tunnel. This form of nerve compression can cause symptoms such as a tingling sensation, numbness, and weakness in the fingers and thumb.

Common Signs of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • A numb or tingling sensation in the hand and fingers. Digits such as the thumb, ring, middle and index finger are typically affected. You may experience pain similar to an electric shock in the impacted digits. The sensation may progressively advance from the wrist to the arm.
  • Weakness in the hand, which may cause you to drop objects.
Common Causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome develops from a compressed median nerve. Anything that results in irritation or compression of the median nerve can cause it. For example, a fracture of the wrist can narrow the space in the carpal tunnel and cause irritation of the nerve. An underlying condition like rheumatoid arthritis, which causes swelling and inflammation, may be another cause of the disorder.

There are several risk factors associated with the disorder, such as:

  • Anatomical issues like fractures or dislocations affect the size of the space in the carpal tunnel. These significant changes can place increased pressure on the median nerve.
  • A nerve-damaging disorder like chronic diabetes may result in damage to the nerves.
  • Inflammatory disorders such as gout and rheumatoid arthritis cause inflammation, which has a detrimental impact on the median nerve.
Treatment for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Treatment should begin early from the onset of symptoms. Fortunately, there are non-surgical treatment options for carpal tunnel syndrome, such as:

  • Splinting of the wrist firmly secures the position of the wrist.
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories are a temporary solution for pain.

However, if conservative treatment options don’t help, surgery is often a last resort. Usually, surgery aims to relieve pressure on the median nerve by severing the ligament pressing against it.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome FAQ:
01

When should I see the doctor?

As soon as symptoms begin to occur, it's best to visit the doctor for a thorough evaluation.

02

How long do carpal tunnel symptoms last?

The duration of symptoms varies depending on the severity of the condition and how early treatment begins.

  • Mild symptoms may improve within a few weeks with rest, splinting and activity modification.
  • More persistent cases can last several months, especially if the nerve has been compressed for a long time.
  • Without proper treatment, symptoms may continue to worsen over time.

Early diagnosis typically leads to quicker and more effective relief.

03

Do you always need surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome?

No, surgery is not always necessary.

Many people experience significant improvement with non-surgical treatments, such as wrist splints, activity modification, physiotherapy and anti-inflammatory medication.

Surgery is usually recommended when:

  • Symptoms persist for 3–6 months despite conservative treatment.
  • There is worsening numbness, weakness or hand function.
  • Nerve testing shows significant compression of the median nerve.

Most cases improve with early, non-surgical care.
